5 Tips for Your Senior Session

Client tips

There is no question that senior year of high school is a big deal. With all the decisions and senior activities, it’s enough to make your head spin. So, to help ease the mental load and to help plan, here are my 5 tips for your senior session. With some forethought and collaboration, your session will be meaningful and personalized to you, leaving you and your family with many cherished images for years to come.

1. Location, location, location

When you think of your senior year, what is the one place that holds the most meaning to you? Of course, your high school should be top of mind. Spending four years in one place create lasting memories. We could start there for a photo session, but in addition, what other place is significant to your senior? Are they an athlete? Are they a musician? Do they spend tons of money on Chipotle (or is that just my kid)?!? In the DFW metroplex, you can find locations that suit your vibe, from city lights to rustic charm. Choose 2-3 locations that suit your personality and interests.

2. What to wear (and what not to wear)

Preparing a variety of outfits can offer a diverse collection of images you’ll love. Therefore, I like to recommend selecting outfits that reflect different styles (i.e. casual, dressy, sporty, and maybe a themed outfit like an athletic uniform). I can think of no better way to showcase your personality, as you are now, than displaying your personal style. With that said, I also believe that you should wear what’s comfortable for you too. Another consideration is be mindful of your chosen locations and wear colors that pair well with them. Your lessons on the color wheel can help, but I can also assist in picking outfits. To finish the look, don’t forget accessories like jewelry, watches, and most importantly, shoes! (For example, if you’re in a field, don’t wear heels. A flat sole shoe, like a wedge or Converse, or cowboy boots would be better suited for this natural setting.)

3. Grooming tips

Confidence and being comfortable are important to look and feel your best for your photo session. If you want a haircut, do it at least a week before your session. You’ll want time to style your hair the way you want. Ladies, pamper yourself with hair and makeup if you prefer! Just ensure your makeup artist enhances your features.

4. Bring props

Props can enhance your images by showcasing your hobbies or activities. Pro tip! They also give your hands something to hold. Bring all the medals you won during your track season or the trumpet you used to practice to get you to first chair. Looking back, these images will bring back high school memories.

5. Relax and have fun

This photo session is your time to have fun and let loose. It’s okay to relax and enjoy the photo shoot experience. The more relaxed you are, the better the images will be and I will guide you through the entire process to look your best.

Senior photo sessions commemorate your growth, style, and achievements over four years. Most importantly, they’re meant to be fun, so I hope these 5 tips for your senior session is helpful to you! If this is stressful for you, I’m here to help guide you in making a special, meaningful choice.
